The Digital Signage Federation has named the winners of its first Pixel Awards, a new program recognizing digital signage projects, technologies and industry contributions across six categories. For operators and integrators, the list offers a snapshot of which installations the industry's own trade body is holding up as benchmarks.
According to the announcement, the awards drew 67 entries, evaluated by a six-member judging panel. Winners were announced Sept. 17 during the DSF Mix & Mingle at Filoli in Woodside, California.
ClearLED was the biggest winner, taking two of the six project and technology awards. Its 360 Degree Reality Emulator at the Bristol Digital Futures Institute won the Behind the Screens award, which DSF says recognizes technical innovation and integration. ClearLED also won the Engagement Engine award, for audience engagement and measurable impact, for its five-story transparent LED wall at Pacific Place.
NanoLumens won the Pixel Perfect award, covering visual design and creative execution, for The Oculus installation at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. SNA Displays took the Rollout Rockstar award, which DSF says recognizes execution on complex, large-scale deployments, for its Circa Digital Spectacular installation in Los Angeles. Livesignage won the Showstopper award for best overall digital experience with the Hitachi Rail Customer Experience Center.
On the individual side, Gil Matzliah of NoviSign received the Industry Illuminator award, described as recognizing individual excellence and impact on the industry. DSF also presented its Alan C. Brawn Educator of the Year Award to Tim Baker, marketing manager at Navori Labs, for his work in education and professional development within the sector.
DSF Chairman Frank Pisano said the inaugural awards gave the federation a chance to recognize work being done across the industry, and that finalists showed creativity, technical expertise and a commitment to strong experiences.
The announcement does not list the other finalists or disclose entry criteria beyond the six category names, so it is not clear how these projects were weighed against each other or what metrics, if any, judges used for categories like "measurable impact." DSF says it intends to continue the Pixel Awards in future years, which should give the program more of a track record for operators to judge by.
