Düsseldorf University Installs 21:9 5K INFiLED LED Wall for Media Students

Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences has installed a 4.8m by 2.03m INFiLED WT Series LED wall in its Faculty of Media, replacing AV equipment the university says was more than a decade old. The project, specified and installed by integrator AbisZ Medien, is a reminder that LED walls are finding their way into education spaces that need professional-grade review tools, not just lecture displays.
The brief mattered as much as the hardware. Media students shoot and grade work in ultra-wide formats, and the faculty wanted a genuine 21:9 canvas rather than a 16:9 screen with footage letterboxed into the middle. According to the university, when students are assessed on colour grading, framing and visual detail, a display that crops, stretches or softens the image is not a cosmetic issue but a grading problem.
INFiLED's solution reaches the 21:9-style ratio through array geometry rather than a single oversized panel. The WT cabinets are 600mm by 337.5mm, each a 16:9 tile with 640 by 360 pixels. Arranged eight wide by six high, 48 cabinets combine to produce 5,120 by 2,160 pixels, a 64:27 ultra-wide ratio at true 5K width. That approach lets an integrator build a non-standard aspect ratio from standard-format cabinets, which is worth noting for anyone specifying similar screening or presentation spaces.
The panels use a 0.93mm pixel pitch, giving a density the company states at 1,137,777 pixels per square metre, with flip-chip COB technology rated up to 100,000:1 contrast, 16-bit greyscale, up to 1,000 nits brightness and a refresh rate up to 3,840Hz. Signal management runs through a NovaStar MX2000Pro controller. INFiLED's SolidSkin conformal layer covers the LEDs in a continuous surface, which the company says protects against contact damage and diffuses light for more uniform images and deeper blacks, without the individual LED casings that can break away on other products.
Power draw is listed at a maximum of about 2.9kW across all 48 panels, averaging under 1kW in normal use, modest numbers for a wall of this resolution. Each cabinet is 29.4mm deep and weighs 4.5kg, putting the full array at roughly 216kg, light enough for a flush wall mount with standard fixings rather than a custom subframe. Servicing is done from the front using INFiLED's magnetic tool, removing the need for rear access clearance.
For integrators, the installation is a useful case study in building oddball aspect ratios from off-the-shelf cabinet formats, and in specifying front-serviceable walls for spaces where downtime has to fit around a teaching timetable rather than the other way round. The announcement does not disclose project cost or installation timeline.

Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences’ Faculty of Media has been equipped with an ultra-wide canvas that shows student work at its intended aspect ratio.
Aa 4.8m by 2.03m INFiLED WT Series LED wall has been installed in Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences’ Faculty of Media.
The faculty’s previous AV set-up was more than a decade old and the university wanted its media students working with display technology of the standard they will meet in industry.
As students shoot and grade work in ultra-wide formats, the display had to be a genuine 21:9 canvas rather than a conventional 16:9 screen with the image letter-boxed into the middle of it.
As the faculty wanted a display that would make presenting work on it feel like a professional screening, rather than a classroom exercise, students and staff favoured an ultra-wide 5K wall.
In terms of assessment, when a student is evaluated on colour grading, framing and visual detail, any compromise the display introduces becomes a compromise in how the work is judged. Cropping, stretching or softness are not cosmetic problems in that context.
The solution, which was specified and installed by integrator AbisZ Medien, reaches 21:9 through the shape of the array, rather than the shape of the product.
The WT cabinets measure 600mm by 337.5mm – a 16:9 format with 640 by 360 pixels each. Arranged eight wide by six high, 48 cabinets produce a 4.8m by 2.03m wall with 5,120 by 2,160 pixels, which is 64:27, the standard ultra-wide ratio, at true 5K width.
The 0.93mm pixel pitch creates a density of 1,137,777 pixels per sq metre. The flip-chip COB panels have a contrast ratio of up to 100,000:1 with 16-bit greyscale, up to 1,000 nits of brightness and a refresh rate of up to 3,840Hz.
Signal management runs through a NovaStar MX2000Pro controller.
INFiLED’s SolidSkin conformal layer seals every LED beneath a continuous surface, which both protects the face against contact and diffuses light for a softer, more-uniform image and deeper perceived blacks. There is no individual LED casing to break away.
In terms of energy consumption, the installation is modest for its resolution, drawing a maximum of about 2.9kW across the 48 panels and averaging under 1kW in normal operation.
Each cabinet is 29.4mm deep and weighs 4.5kg, making the entire array about 216kg and allowing a flush wall mount using standard fixings rather than a custom subframe.
Servicing is carried out from the front using INFiLED’s magnetic tool, which removes any need for rear access clearance behind the wall and means maintenance can be done inside a teaching timetable rather than around it.
