E Ink and Fujifilm Team Up on Color E-Paper for Japan Rail Posters

E Ink and Fujifilm Imaging Systems are building a joint business selling large-format color e-paper displays to Japan's railway industry, with the first prototype expected by the end of 2026. For operators watching e-paper as a possible replacement for printed posters in transit environments, this is a concrete signal that a major display maker and a major print and imaging distributor think the economics now work.
The pitch, according to the companies, is straightforward. Japanese rail operators are short on staff and tired of paying to print, transport, hang and dispose of paper posters. E Ink supplies the color e-paper technology, which it says already ships through major international hardware manufacturers. Fujifilm Imaging Systems, which sells the Fujifilm group's products in Japan, brings relationships with rail clients and expertise in color management and print quality, according to Takashi Toyofuku, a director at the company.
E Ink president JM Hung said the company sees significant opportunity to replace conventional printed posters in Japan's transportation sector. E Ink is already running a color e-paper advertising trial at Tokyo Station, so this partnership extends an existing effort rather than starting from zero.
Two new products on the roadmap
Alongside the Fujifilm tie-up, E Ink announced two additions to its Marquee display line aimed at this market. The first is a 55-inch color e-paper display built for outdoor use, with a prototype slated for December 2026 and a market launch targeted for March 2027. The second is a larger B1-format panel, roughly 28 by 39 inches (71 by 100 centimeters), with a prototype planned for October 2027 and launch in January 2028.
Those timelines put a real product more than a year away for the smaller unit and over two years out for the larger one. The announcement does not say pricing, power consumption, brightness, refresh rate, or how content will be managed and updated once displays are installed. For an advertising-poster use case, update frequency and the software or workflow for pushing new creative will matter as much as the panel itself, and none of that is detailed here.
The companies say future projects will be supported end to end, from initial proposal through installation and ongoing operation, which suggests Fujifilm Imaging Systems will act as the implementation and service partner in Japan while E Ink supplies the underlying panel technology. For now this is a partnership announcement and a product roadmap rather than a shipping deployment. The first real test of whether rail operators bite will be the December 2026 prototype and what, if anything, follows it into actual stations.

The Taiwanese e-paper maker already supplies its technology to major international hardware manufacturers . Fujifilm Imaging Systems sells the Fujifilm group’s portfolio in Japan. It brings experience with printing and color requirements in the transportation sector to the partnership.
“Fujifilm Imaging Systems’ expertise in imaging, printing, color management and quality control strongly complements E Ink’s pioneering role in e-paper technology,” said Takashi Toyofuku, director at Fujifilm Imaging Systems.
According to E Ink, Japanese rail operators are increasingly looking for alternatives to paper posters. Staff is in short supply. Printing, transporting, hanging and disposing of posters has also become more expensive.
