signageOS Benchmarks LG webOS 9.0 Displays, UP5Q Passes All 60 Tests
2026-09-30 · via DailyDOOH
The signageOS Research Center has published a performance report on two LG 4K UHD digital signage display series, the UH5Q and UP5Q, both running webOS 9.0. The tests matter for anyone specifying LG SoC displays for menu boards, video walls or UHD lobby installations, because the report draws a clear performance line between LG's mainstream and performance display tiers within the same webOS generation.
The testing covered 60 scenarios across 15 test groups, developed in cooperation with Screenfeed, a digital signage content provider that has been signageOS's benchmark partner since 2023. Workloads included news, sports and weather applications as well as scenarios with dozens of simultaneously animated elements.
According to signageOS, the UP5Q series passed all 60 test scenarios, making it the first LG webOS model in the series to do so. The company says it is also the first webOS model to deliver gapless UHD playback in both landscape and portrait orientations using H.265-encoded video, with no performance drop between Full HD and UHD modes. It also passed all three real-world HTML5 workloads from Screenfeed.
The mainstream UH5Q series passed 54 of 60 scenarios, a 90% pass rate in signageOS's tally. Five of its six misses came in UHD workloads, though the report says it passed every Full HD video scenario, including multi-playlist playback, mixed content, streaming and synchronized video walls. Its one other miss was on the most demanding Screenfeed HTML5 workload.
For operators, the practical takeaway is that UH5Q remains a viable choice for Full HD deployments, including synchronized video walls, but UP5Q is the tier to specify if a network needs UHD content, browser-heavy HTML5, or complex mixed media. signageOS structured the report around 15 test groups specifically so integrators can check results against their own deployment type, such as a Full HD menu board network versus a UHD lobby display, rather than relying on a single aggregate score. The report also includes a comparison against a Windows 11 PC used as an external media player reference, though the announcement does not detail those results.
Lukas Danek, CPO and co-founder of signageOS, said each SoC generation closes gaps the previous one could not, citing webOS 4.0's struggles with simultaneous playlists and webOS 6.0's failure to handle UHD. He said UP5Q has now closed the UHD gap as well, and argued that SoC displays have moved past catching up to mainstream signage needs, framing the buying question as how much headroom a customer wants for future workloads.
signageOS says every scenario ran on physical hardware and was recorded in high-resolution slow motion for frame-level review, with each test required to survive 26 hours of continuous playback to pass. The company says it produced the report independently and received no compensation for it. The Research Center has run this benchmark series since 2019, expanding it to 60 scenarios and testing SoC platforms from multiple manufacturers over that period.

Latest @signageOS Research Center webOS Report
The signageOS Research Center**, the independent testing arm of signageOS, which manages the devices behind digital signage networks, has just tested two LG 4K UHD digital signage display series screens, UH5Q and UP5Q, both running webOS 9.0, across 60 scenarios in 15 test groups and has published an LG webOS 9.0 performance report, developed in cooperation with Screenfeed.
Lukas Danek , CPO and co-founder of signageOS told us “Every SoC generation we benchmark closes gaps the previous one couldn’t. webOS 4.0 struggled with simultaneous playlists, webOS 6.0 solved that but not UHD, and now UP5Q has closed that gap too. The takeaway for buyers is that SoC displays are no longer catching up to mainstream signage needs. They’ve moved past them, and the question has become how much headroom you want for what’s next?”
The workloads included news, sports and weather applications, ranging up to a scenario featuring dozens of simultaneously animated elements.
LG’s performance-tier UP5Q series passed all 60 Test Scenarios, the first LG webOS model in the series to pass every one. It is also the first webOS model to deliver gapless UHD playback in both landscape and portrait orientations, using H.265-encoded video.
UP5Q showed no performance degradation between Full HD and UHD operating modes. It also passed all three real-world HTML5 workloads from Screenfeed, a provider of ready-made and custom digital signage content and signageOS’s benchmark partner since 2023.
With webOS 9.0, LG introduces two distinct hardware tiers within the same operating system generation, and the report shows where the line between them falls. The mainstream UH5Q series passed 54 of 60 Test Scenarios, a score of 90%. Five of its six unmet scenarios occurred in UHD workloads, and it passed every Full HD video scenario — including multi-playlist playback, mixed content, streaming and synchronized video walls. Its remaining miss came in the most demanding Screenfeed HTML5 workload. UP5Q, built on a more capable SoC, handles the UHD, browser-intensive HTML5 and complex mixed-content workloads where UH5Q reaches its limits.
The report is built to be read against a specific deployment. Results are broken out across 15 Test Groups, so an integrator planning a Full HD menu board network, a synchronized video wall or a UHD lobby display can check the scenarios that match that content rather than relying on an overall score. The report also benchmarks both tiers against a Windows 11 PC used as an external media player reference.
The results cap seven years of progress in the signageOS benchmark series, which has evaluated SoC platforms from multiple manufacturers and grown to 60 Test Scenarios since 2019.
Every scenario ran on physical devices and was recorded in high-resolution slow-motion video for frame-level review. signageOS produced the report independently and received no compensation for it.
** The Research Center was started back in 2019 because the SoC-versus-media-player argument had been running for years without very much public evidence on either side. Since then they have tested smart displays generation by generation, on physical hardware, filmed in slow motion and checked against published pass criteria. Every scenario must survive 26 hours of continuous playback to pass.
